What is a CNC machine? How it works and its advantages

A CNC (computer numerical control) machine is a computer-controlled production tool. It can be used to machine, cut, engrave, or drill various materials—wood, foam, plastic, textiles, composites—with extreme precision. All of the machine's movements are dictated by a digital program: a G-code file.

How does it work?

The principle is based on the use of digital plans (CAD/CAM) translated into machine language (G-code). This code controls the motors, axes, and tools to perform the desired movements.

At KMSYSTEM, the KMShape V5 software, developed in-house, allows you to load these programs, configure the parameters, and supervise the entire machining cycle. The interface is simple, intuitive, and compatible with all G-code files.

Key advantages:

  • Precision: Tolerances of a few microns are possible.

  • Speed of execution: Accelerated production compared to manual methods.

  • Repeatability: Each part produced is identical to the previous one.

  • Safety: Less human intervention in critical operations.

  • Flexibility: Quick change of series or format, easy customization.

Why invest in a CNC?

A CNC is a lever for competitiveness. You improve the quality of your products, reduce your subcontracting costs, optimize your materials, and speed up your delivery times.

It is also a strategic choice: you internalize critical operations and gain autonomy and responsiveness to your customers.
